What a treat. I am spending the week with Jeni in her darling studio apartment in Chelsea, and last night after hours of catching up we are even more convinced we should share our passion with others. We also both admitted to our absolute love for health products and an unhealthy obsession of strolling the aisles of Whole Foods for hours on end.
She introduced me to a Superfood Shake Formula called Shakeology that she swears by. Unlike the majority of shake mixes or protein powders found in stores, this product is packed full of natural ingredients and super foods from all over the world to promote nutrition and provide natural energy without the use of stimulants. The slogan claims it's "The Healthiest Meal of the Day," but this shake could easily be added into a morning routine or used as an afternoon snack to get nourishing nutrients and support a healthy lifestyle.
This discovering could not have come at a more perfect time. In my nutrition course we are studying the effects of many of the ingredients found on this label, and getting these nutrients through smoothies is easiest way to intake them all at once. Plus you can add in fruit, honey, cinnamon, and nut butters to mask the taste of some of the grassy ingredients.
After tasting the stuff you'll be hooked. Jeni has the chocolate flavor, which might I add is not some artificial, fake chocolate but is actually Cacao (the first ingredient on the back label). Cacao is super high in antioxidants and is a great base for smoothie making because let's be honest, who doesn't love a chocolate milkshake everyday! Even better, the company website offers tons of great smoothie recipes (including a mocha frappucinno for those coffee lovers), as well as recipes for pies, cookies, and a healthy version of peanut butter cups!
Overall, this mix seems to be an easy way to increase your superfood intake. All you need is one scoop! For me, it's beats the alternative of buying all of the ingredients individually and blending them. I mean, there are mushrooms in this mix for goodness sake. The last thing I want to be doing in the morning is washing mushrooms and sticking them in a smoothie, but one scoop of chocolate powder, a banana, and some water I can definitely do! Count me in.
Do you have any superfood shake mixes you're hooked on? Any I should try?

I'm big into chia seeds! GT's Kombucha combines kombucha and chia seeds into an interesting drink, full of omega 3's, protein, and fiber, but at $3+ a drink, I took the slightly more economical route and started buying Chia seeds from Trader Joe's and Whole foods. Chia seeds are flavorless and absorb any liquid easily, it does gel similar to a tapioca though. (I happen to like that texture). A favorite go to drink is Zico chocolate coconut water WITH chia seeds. Nutrient rich and rehydrating! Chias are great in anything, just stir stir stir. Enjoy! (Great in baking and salads too!)
ReplyDeleteRachel: Chia Seeds are my new favorite science experiment. They have got to be the coolest food on the planet, not to mention the fact that they have so many health benefits including those essential Omega-3's that are hard for a veg head like me to get. I have been working on a BOMB Chia Seed pudding recipe that I will share really soon, but just want to add some finishing touches.

ReplyDeleteRachel, I love Chia seeds too! They are one of the ingrediens in Shakeology. I also like to add them to yogurt and put berries on top!
ReplyDeleteI LOVE Shakeology! Try the chocolate with a cup of almond vanilla milk, a banana, 1 TBSP of natural peanut butter, and blend it all with ice. SO yummy! :)
ReplyDeleteHeidi: that's exactly the shake I made! What a crazy coincidence, and it was absolutely delicious! Just about to make myself another one :) Jenny also suggested adding cinnamon for a fun kick!
DeleteThanks for the great comments ladies! It's so nice to chat with like-minded, health conscious women. Have a wonderful day!
